August 5th, Australia Day 165

I took these shots on my trek around Darwin, my last day in the Northern Territory.

This is the main broadcasting building for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Darwin. The ABC has a similar role to the CBC in Canada. Posted by Picasa

This is a memorial to the men and women of Darwin who have served in the Armed Forces. Posted by Picasa

This is the political and judicial center of the Northern Territory. In Darwin, by the water, there is Liberty Square which has the Territorial Legislature, the Territorial Supreme Court as well as some other government offices. Posted by Picasa

This is the entrance to the Territorial Legislature on Liberty Square. Its architecture is very reminiscent of the State Legislature of Hawai'i in Honolulu. Posted by Picasa

Theis is the Main Foyer looking towards the rear of the building. Unfortunately the light coming through the windows at the back completely destroyed the colours I saw; it was not this dark. The camera could not get a good focus with that light hitting it. Posted by Picasa

This is a much better shot of the Main Foyer. This is looking towards the entrance of the building and you can clearly see the colour scheme used. Posted by Picasa

This is the Speaker's Green behind the Legislature witha view over the bay. It was once the place where the Speaker of the Chamber could rest for a bit but is now open to the public and even has a little restaurant. Posted by Picasa

This is the fountain on the Speaker's Green. Posted by Picasa

This is the library of the Territorial Legislature. The large rectangular object is a quilt made by several people from Darwin showing various points in its history. Posted by Picasa

This lobby between the main foyer and the library holds several items of histroical importance, most in relation to World War 2. Out of view is a portion of a wall of the post office that once stood here which was damaged by the Japanese raids. Posted by Picasa

This is the legislative chamber inside the Territorial Legislature. There are 25 members of the assembly elected every so often by the residents of the Northern Territory. Posted by Picasa

On the other side of Liberty Square, there is the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. Posted by Picasa

This is Courtroom 1, the "show court" of the Supreme Court. Judging by the 3 chairs on the dais, I'd say that this is where appeals are heard. The large coat-of-arms is that of the Northern Territory. Posted by Picasa

This is the same courtroom seen from the public gallery on the 2nd floor. Posted by Picasa

This stone was used to determine the exact latitude and longitude of all observatories in Australia as its exact location had been calculated. Posted by Picasa

This edifice houses the offices of the Territorial Administrator. Posted by Picasa

This is Government House in Darwin. Posted by Picasa

This commemorative stone outside Government House, tells the story of the first raids on Darwin during World War 2. Posted by Picasa

Like Sparks Street in Ottawa, Darwin also has a pedestrian mall called the "Smith Street Mall". Posted by Picasa

Since World War 2, Darwin has remained a very important Australian naval center. That day this ship, a missile frigate, the largest type of warship in the Australian arsenal, was docked in the harbour. Posted by Picasa

Darwin is an active commercial port as well, and that day I saw this ship, I imagine a very large cargo vessel, out in the harbour. Posted by Picasa

This is one of the tunnels dug in World War Two to store oil underground so that it could not be bombed. The war finished before the tunnels were completed or used for large scale storage. Posted by Picasa

This giant structure is a loading dock for some of the larger vessels that come through this way. Posted by Picasa

This is part of Darwin's extensive dockyards. Posted by Picasa

Along the waterfront, there is this interesting outdoor cinema. Named the "Deck Chair Theatre", it shows all kinds of movies, at a discount, and uses deck chairs for seats. Posted by Picasa
